Mr. Ansumana Bojang, Customs Manager at The Gambia Revenue Authority and member of the Operation Coordination Unit of Operation SAMA 2, is currently in Mombasa, Kenya, attending Operation LYNX Africa, an initiative hosted by the World Customs Organization.
This marks the first time the operation has expanded to Africa, with the goal of combating illicit trade, money laundering, and smuggling. The meeting is taking place from 3rd March 2025 to 8th March 2025. Key statistics discussed during the event include:
1. Illicit trade is valued at over $2 trillion globally.
2. Africa loses $90 billion annually due to illicit financial flows.
3. The counterfeit goods market is worth $509 billion.
4. Illegal logging and wildlife trafficking result in losses of up to $152 billion each year.
5. Governments lose $40 billion annually due to tobacco smuggling.
These figures highlight the urgent need for international cooperation and coordinated action to address the damaging effects of illicit trade on economies, public health, and the environment. The Gambia Revenue Authority remains dedicated to working with global partners to tackle these challenges.
