Some members of GRA senior management attended the 11th Annual International Tax Conference held in Accra, Ghana, from February 26–27, 2025. Those in attendance are Mr Yankuba Darboe Darboe Commissioner General, Mr Essa Jallow Deputy Commissioner General, Mr Yahya Manneh Director Technical Services, Mr Samba Sallah Deputy Commissioner Headquarters Functions, Mrs Mariama Jobe Senior Tax Officer and Mr Malayn Sanneh Communication Sub officer II.
This annual event brings together tax experts, stakeholders, and policymakers to share insights and experiences.
The theme of this year’s conference, “Domestic Revenue Mobilization in the Wake of Dwindling Aid Flows and Increased Debts: Strategies for Developing Economies,” is both timely and critical for the progress of developing nations.
In his speech, CG Darboe emphasized the importance of capacity building, urging his colleagues to invest in developing their staff. He highlighted that strengthening human resources is key to advancing the institution. Given today’s evolving economic landscape, he stressed that developing economies must enhance their revenue generation frameworks to ensure sustainable development and financial resilience.
He also encouraged participants to engage in critical discussions, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening tax systems, improving compliance, and fostering international cooperation with other tax authorities. He urged attendees to share knowledge, engage in constructive dialogue, and work collectively towards actionable solutions.
Addressing the issue of illicit financial flows, he underscored the grave threat they pose to Africa, draining billions annually. He stressed that collaboration is key, advocating for regional partnerships, data-sharing mechanisms, and harmonized policies to combat profit shifting, smuggling, and tax evasion effectively.
Additionally, he highlighted the crucial role of technology and innovation in modern tax administration.
Other speakers echoed similar concerns, emphasizing the need for stronger tax policies and international cooperation to tackle these challenges.
