A five-day intensive workshop on Harmonized System (HS) Intermediate Training for Customs Officers and Clearing Agents was successfully held at the Senegambia Beach Hotel from 4-8 September 2023.
This is the second round of the workshop within the framework of the EU-WCO Programme for the Harmonized System in Africa (HS-Africa Programme), funded by the European Union as part of its assistance to support the Gambia Revenue Authority’s efforts to enhance the capacity of Staff and Clearing Agents on the Harmonized System Classification.
The workshop brought together 12 Customs Officers drawn from different areas of the Customs Department and 3 Clearing Agents with the aim of increasing their knowledge in the areas of tariff classification.
In his opening remarks, the Commissioner General - Mr. Yankuba Darboe, began by welcoming participants and experts to the workshop. Given the complexities involved with HS classification and the potential impact on compliance and revenue collections, the Commissioner General strongly encouraged the participants to actively participate in the discussions to have a better understanding of the HS by the end of the training. He further used the opportunity to express his gratitude and appreciation to the EU-WCO Programme for HS in Africa for the technical assistance rendered to the Gambia Revenue Authority.
The workshop also benefited from presentations made by the WCO Experts on a number of topics, such as General Interpretative Rules, Legal Notes, etc.
It is expected that the training will lead to greater understanding, implementation and the application of HS in the Gambia and the sub-region.
